Fiddler on the Roof
23 to 28 April 2018

A musical theatre tradition, Tevye the milkman tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. With iconic and beloved songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset", "If I were a rich man" and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker", Fiddler on the Roof is the perfect mix of audience-pleasing humour and heart.

An Open Evening on Wednesday 1 November was well attended. In addition to the core of the 9 to 5 cast there were several former members attracted by the prospect of reprising Fiddler on the Roof, six potential new members, as well as three young people from WOW.

Key points of discussion:

  • There are 20 named parts in the show, with several non-singing roles e.g. the Constable.
  • The ensemble needs to be split into Papas, Mamas, Sons and Daughters, so we do need appropriate age groups. Young people are encouraged to come along. Tevye has five daughters, three of whom get a man!
  • There are at least four large ensemble numbers but when the ensemble is not singing many may be involved as part of the village scenes. As described above many will have dialogue.
  • There are two scenes that require some dancing - a Cossack dance and the iconic bottle dance, during which traditionally dressed Jewish men dance, each with a bottle balanced on their hat. Julie Slater will be choreographing these numbers.
  • We are considering having voice captains for each of the main singing ranges i.e. soprano, alto, tenor and bass. If you would like to volunteer for this please talk to James Tovey. The idea is to use the stronger voices to teach the harmonies to the others in their vocal range. This does not mean there will be no note-bashing but it does mean that some useful vocal work could be done during downtime.

General membership information

There will be a £5 audition fee for all potential new members, payable before the audition and which will be deducted from your annual membership. The annual membership fee is £60 and there is a production fee of £40. Current WOW members do not have to pay the membership fee and their production fee is reduced to £20, as it is for all people in full time education.

The cast size will be approx 30 people.
